Invoicing & VAT

Taking a deposit before work starts

Ask for an upfront payment to protect your time. Here is how to invoice a deposit.

A deposit is a smart way to start work with confidence. It protects your time and sets a clear, professional tone.

Create a deposit invoice

From your project, create an invoice and mark it as a deposit, then set the amount or percentage you want up front. Send it the same way as any other invoice.

Link it to the final invoice

When the work is done, your final invoice can reference the deposit so the balance is clear. Your client sees exactly what they have already paid and what is left, no awkward maths.

Taking a deposit before you start is completely normal for freelance work, and most clients expect it.
